How big can the image be?

There's no fixed limit: the image is processed in strips, so time and memory grow with its size. Rough figures from a recent desktop (Apple M-series, Chrome); slower machines will take longer.

Image size	Time	Memory
20,000 × 10,000	~3 s	< 1.5 GB
32,767 × 32,767	~15 s	~1.5 GB
65,535 × 65,535	~1 min	~2 GB

JPG files can't exceed 65,535px per side (a limit of the format). PNG has no practical limit.
Memory depends mainly on the width, so very tall images are fine.
Progressive JPGs and interlaced PNGs have to be loaded into memory all at once and may fail when very large (roughly above 500 megapixels, about 22,000 × 22,000px). If that happens, re-save the file as a standard (baseline) JPG or a non-interlaced PNG.
